2 Timothy 4

Before Christ Jesus who will judge the living and the dead, by his appearing and his kingdom: proclaim the word, at a good moment and at a bad. A time comes when they will not bear healthy teaching but, itching in the hearing, heap up teachers and swerve to myths. Be sober, suffer hardship, do an evangelist’s work, fully accomplish your service. Paul is already being poured out; his departure is at hand — the good contest contended, the course completed, the faith kept, the crown of righteousness laid away for that day. Come quickly: Demas loved this age and forsook him, only Luke remains; bring Mark, the cloak, the books, the parchments; beware Alexander the coppersmith. At his first defence all forsook him, but the Lord stood by him and rescued him from the lion’s mouth, and will save him into the heavenly kingdom. Greetings — Prisca and Aquila, the house of Onesiphorus, Eubulus, Pudens, Linus, Claudia. Come before winter. The Lord with your spirit; grace with you all.

1
I solemnly testify before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom:
first here Christ Χριστός Christos
first here Jesus Ἰησοῦς Iēsous
2
proclaim the word; stand by at a good moment and at a bad; expose, rebuke, exhort, with all patience and teaching.
3
For there will be a time when they will not bear the healthy teaching, but according to their own desires they will heap up teachers for themselves, itching in the hearing,
4
and they will turn the hearing away from the truth, and will swerve to the myths.
5
But you, be sober in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fully accomplish your service.

Rendering options · 4

Adopted
“stand by” — ἐπίστηθι as Acts 22:13

Basis Acts 12:7 · 22:13 ‘stand by’ (of persons) as fixed — ‘be urgent’ would lose the verb · beside what the text does not say (the word, as it reads).

“be ready”

Basis The familiar rendering.

Rejected ‘Ready’ is the site of ἑτοιμάζω; the ‘stand’ of ἐφίστημι disappears.

Adopted
“itching in the hearing” — ἀκοή not turned into ‘ears’

Basis Rom 10:17 ‘hearing’ as fixed — ‘ears’ is the site of οὖς · keeps v.4 ‘turn the hearing away’ on the same word.

Adopted
“fully accomplish” — πληροφορέω at the site of Luke 1:1

Basis The site-rule of Luke 1:1 ‘things fully accomplished’ — Rom 4:21 ‘be fully assured’ is the site with a person as subject · ‘fully’ ties the two.
