Acts 10

Cornelius, a commander of a hundred in Caesarea, sees an angel in a vision and sends for Peter. On a housetop in Joppa Peter sees a vessel like a sheet coming down from heaven and hears three times: what God has cleansed, you must not make common. In Cornelius's house Peter grasps that God shows no partiality of face and proclaims Jesus, and before he has finished the Spirit falls upon the nations — the Gentiles' Pentecost. No one can forbid the water.

Why this rendering

Acts.10.1 Observation

Syntactic observation

ἑκατοντάρχης — the Lukan form of centurion (the -ης form of Luke 7:2, 23:47). This edition kept the Matthew-Luke ἑκατοντάρχης / ἑκατόνταρχος as commander of a hundred and the Latin loan κεντυρίων, which only Mark uses, as centurion — and that split holds in Acts (which never uses κεντυρίων). σπεῖρα, cohort, is the word of John 18:3, 12 and Mark 15:16; the Italian cohort is a name. V.2 φοβούμενος τὸν θεόν, fearing God, is the idiom for a Gentile attached to the synagogue — repeated at v.22 and 13:16, 26; the base text coins no separate word for such a person. His hour of prayer (v.3, the ninth) is the hour of Peter and John at 3:1.

Adopted
“commander of a hundred” — the fixed Lukan rendering; centurion only for Mark's κεντυρίων

Basis Where the base text divides words, this edition divides renderings. Every commander in Acts (10:1, 22; 21:32; 22:25-26; 23:17, 23; 24:23; 27:1, 6, 11, 31, 43) is this form.

2
εὐσεβὴς καὶ φοβούμενος τὸν θεὸν σὺν παντὶ τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ, ⸀ποιῶν ἐλεημοσύνας πολλὰς τῷ λαῷ καὶ δεόμενος τοῦ θεοῦ διὰ παντός,
devout and fearing God with all his house, giving many alms to the people and begging God continually,
3
εἶδεν ἐν ὁράματι φανερῶς ὡσεὶ ⸀περὶ ὥραν ἐνάτην τῆς ἡμέρας ἄγγελον τοῦ θεοῦ εἰσελθόντα πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἰπόντα αὐτῷ· Κορνήλιε.
saw plainly in a vision, about the ninth hour of the day, an angel of God coming in to him and saying to him, “Cornelius.”
4
ὁ δὲ ἀτενίσας αὐτῷ καὶ ἔμφοβος γενόμενος εἶπεν· Τί ἐστιν, κύριε; εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ· Αἱ προσευχαί σου καὶ αἱ ἐλεημοσύναι σου ἀνέβησαν εἰς μνημόσυνον ⸀ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ θεοῦ·
And gazing fixedly at him and becoming afraid, he said, “What is it, Lord?” And he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have gone up as a memorial before God.
5

And when the angel who spoke to him had gone, he called two of his household slaves and a devout soldier from among those who attended him,

and having expounded everything to them, he sent them to Joppa.

Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ὁδοιπορούντων ἐκείνων καὶ τῇ πόλει ἐγγιζόντων ἀνέβη Πέτρος ἐπὶ τὸ δῶμα προσεύξασθαι περὶ ὥραν ἕκτην.
On the next day, as they were journeying and drawing near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour.

and he sees heaven opened and a certain vessel coming down, like a great sheet, let down by four corners upon the earth,

ἐν ᾧ ὑπῆρχεν πάντα τὰ τετράποδα ⸂καὶ ἑρπετὰ τῆς γῆς καὶ⸃ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ.
in which were all the four-footed animals and creeping things of the earth and birds of heaven.
13
καὶ ἐγένετο φωνὴ πρὸς αὐτόν· Ἀναστάς, Πέτρε, θῦσον καὶ φάγε.
And there came a voice to him: “Rise, Peter, slaughter and eat.”
14
ὁ δὲ Πέτρος εἶπεν· Μηδαμῶς, κύριε, ὅτι οὐδέποτε ἔφαγον πᾶν κοινὸν ⸀καὶ ἀκάθαρτον.
But Peter said, “By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything common and unclean.”
Why this rendering

Acts.10.14 Observation

Syntactic observation

κοινὸν καὶ ἀκάθαρτον — common and unclean. κοινός, common, is the root this edition fixed as make common (κοινόω) at Mark 7:15-23 — the ordinary as the opposite of the holy. V.15's command, what God has cleansed you must not make common (ἃ ὁ θεὸς ἐκαθάρισεν σὺ μὴ κοίνου), uses the verb of Mark 7:19's narrator's aside (thus declaring all foods clean — καθαρίζων): what Mark writes as a gloss, Acts writes as a voice from heaven. And at v.28 Peter himself moves the vision from food to people — that I should call no man common or unclean. Μηδαμῶς, κύριε (by no means, Lord) has the shape of Ezekiel's protest (4:14). Three times (ἐπὶ τρίς) — that Peter's threefold denial (Luke 22:34) returns as a threefold vision is a reading outside the text and is not written.

Rendering options · 1

Adopted
“common and unclean” · “you must not make common”

Basis As fixed at Mark 7 (κοινός common, κοινόω make common). Unclean for both would merge the two words the base text keeps apart.

καὶ φωνὴ πάλιν ἐκ δευτέρου πρὸς αὐτόν· Ἃ ὁ θεὸς ἐκαθάρισεν σὺ μὴ κοίνου.
And the voice came again to him a second time: “What God has cleansed, you must not make common.”

And Peter went down to the men and said, “Behold, I am the one you are seeking. What is the reason for which you are here?”
22

Why this rendering

Acts.10.34 Observation

Syntactic observation

οὐκ ἔστιν προσωπολήμπτης ὁ θεός — God shows no partiality of face. προσωπολήμπτης is unique in the New Testament, built on to receive the face (πρόσωπον + λαμβάνω — the Septuagint's rendering of Hebrew nāśā' pānîm; Luke 20:21, you do not receive the face of men). This edition fixed that phrase at Luke 20:21 with face kept, so face is kept here. V.35 δεκτός, acceptable, is the fixing of Luke 4:19, 24 — the word of the acceptable year of the Lord is the word with which the Gentile is accepted. V.36 εὐαγγελιζόμενος εἰρήνην, bringing the good news of peace, is the phrase of Isaiah 52:7. This one is Lord of all (οὗτός ἐστιν πάντων κύριος) breaks into the middle of the sentence — an insertion the base text leaves without dashes.

Why this rendering

Acts.10.38 Observation

Syntactic observation

ὡς ἔχρισεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεός — how God anointed him. χρίω, to anoint, is the verb of the Isaiah citation at Luke 4:18 (he anointed me) and the root of Χριστός, Christ, the anointed one. In one verse Ἰησοῦν … ἔχρισεν sets down in words that Jesus was anointed = Jesus is the Christ — English anoint and Christ (a transliteration) are strangers, and the join is lost. καταδυναστευομένους ὑπὸ τοῦ διαβόλου — oppressed by the slanderer: διάβολος is the word this edition fixed as slanderer (Matt 4:1; Luke 4:2). εὐεργετῶν, doing good, is unique in the New Testament, cognate with the εὐεργέτης of Luke 22:25 (are called benefactors — a royal title): what kings called themselves, Jesus does. V.39 κρεμάσαντες ἐπὶ ξύλου, hanging him on a tree, is the phrase of 5:30.

Rendering options · 1

Adopted
“oppressed by the slanderer”

Basis διάβολος = slanderer, as fixed — devil would decide the sense in advance.

Lost in translation

That χρίω, anoint, and Χριστός, Christ, share one root — English anointed and Christ do not connect.

Why this rendering

Acts.10.44 Observation

Syntactic observation

Ἔτι λαλοῦντος τοῦ Πέτρου — while Peter was still speaking. The Spirit falls before the sermon ends — and the words of Pentecost in chapter 2 return: ἐπέπεσε τὸ πνεῦμα (fell upon — the verb of 8:16), ἐκκέχυται (poured out — 2:17, 33), λαλούντων γλώσσαις (speaking in languages — 2:4), ἐξέστησαν (beside themselves — 2:7, 12). The author writes the Gentiles' Pentecost in the words of the Jews' Pentecost. V.45 οἱ ἐκ περιτομῆς πιστοί, the believers of the circumcision, stands against τὰ ἔθνη, the nations — this edition fixed ἔθνος as nation (the base text has no separate word for Gentile). V.47 μήτι τὸ ὕδωρ δύναται κωλῦσαί τις — can anyone forbid water: the eunuch's question at 8:36 (τί κωλύει με, what prevents me) returns with the same verb.

Rendering options · 1

Adopted
“poured out even upon the nations” — ἔθνος = nation, as fixed

Basis Gentiles is a word the base text lacks. It must be the same word as 2:5's every nation under heaven for chapter 10 to be heard answering chapter 2.

45
