Ἐπειδήπερ πολλοὶ ἐπεχείρησαν ἀνατάξασθαι διήγησιν περὶ τῶν πεπληροφορημένων ἐν ἡμῖν πραγμάτων,
Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile in order a narrative concerning the things fully accomplished among us,
2
καθὼς παρέδοσαν ἡμῖν οἱ ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς αὐτόπται καὶ ὑπηρέται γενόμενοι τοῦ λόγου,
just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and became servants of the word handed them down to us,
3
ἔδοξε κἀμοὶ παρηκολουθηκότι ἄνωθεν πᾶσιν ἀκριβῶς καθεξῆς σοι γράψαι, κράτιστε Θεόφιλε,
it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely from the beginning, to write them for you accurately and in order, most excellent Theophilus,
Why this rendering
Luke.1.3 Observation
Syntactic observation
Of the four gospels this is the only place where the author states what he did, and those four verses (1-4) hold **ten words unique in the corpus** — ἐπειδήπερ, inasmuch as; ἐπιχειρέω, to undertake; ἀνατάσσομαι, to compile in order; διήγησις, a narrative; πληροφορέω, to be fully accomplished; αὐτόπτης, an eyewitness; κράτιστος, most excellent; Θεόφιλος; κατηχέω, to be instructed by hearing; ἀσφάλεια, certainty. Nowhere else in this corpus do first occurrences crowd so thickly. Besides these, παρακολουθέω, to follow closely, stands at two places, the other Mark 16:17 — inside the longer ending, printed under ⟦ ⟧. ἀκριβῶς, accurately, is also one of two, the other Matthew 2:8, where Herod says search **accurately** for the child. καθεξῆς, in order, occurs twice in Luke (1:3, 8:1). The build of the sentence is striking too: v.1 says many have undertaken, v.2 as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses handed down to us, and v.3 it seemed good to me also … to write. So the author first records that others came before him, then states what he did in three adverbs — ἄνωθεν, from the beginning; ἀκριβῶς, accurately; καθεξῆς, in order. Verse 4 gives the purpose: ἵνα ἐπιγνῷς … τὴν ἀσφάλειαν, that you may know the certainty.
Rendering options · 2
Adopted “it seemed good to me also … to write in order” — all three adverbs kept
Basis ἄνωθεν, ἀκριβῶς and καθεξῆς are the author's statement of method and none is collapsed; ἀκριβῶς is held to one rendering with Matthew 2:8 so it stays countable.
Compress the adverbs — “to write an orderly account”
Basis Three adverbs together read heavily in English and Korean.
Rejected These four verses are the one place the author describes his own work, and the statement rides on the three adverbs; compressing them removes what he says he did.
Lost in translation
vv.1-4 as one sentence In Greek vv.1-4 are **a single sentence** of stacked subordinate clauses, a periodic build found nowhere else in this corpus. Neither Korean nor English carries that weight in one sentence, so it is usually broken up — and in breaking it the contrast of many have undertaken … therefore I too is blunted.
4
ἵνα ἐπιγνῷς περὶ ὧν κατηχήθης λόγων τὴν ἀσφάλειαν.
so that you may know the certainty of the words in which you were instructed.

Ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ⸀Ἡρῴδου βασιλέως τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἱερεύς τις ὀνόματι Ζαχαρίας ἐξ ἐφημερίας Ἀβιά, ⸀καὶ γυνὴ ⸀αὐτῷ ἐκ τῶν θυγατέρων Ἀαρών, καὶ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς Ἐλισάβετ.
It came to pass in the days of Herod, king of Judea, that there was a certain priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Why this rendering
Luke.1.5 Observation
Syntactic observation
The Greek of the preface (vv.1-4) and the Greek from v.5 differ in texture. Verses 1-4 are one long periodic sentence; v.5 opens Ἐγένετο ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις…, it came to pass in the days of… — the narrative manner of the Septuagint. So having written four lines of Greek preface the author changes his style at once. ἐγένετο occurs seven times in this chapter (vv.5, 8, 23, 41, 44, 59, 65) — and not once in the four lines of preface. ἐφημερία, a priestly division, occurs twice in the corpus and both are in this chapter (1:5, 8). And Luke dates the time by persons: the days of Herod the king, the division of Abijah, one of the daughters of Aaron. Such circumstantial marking is absent from Mark; Matthew has Herod (2:1) but names no division or descent. The δικαιώματα, ordinances, and ἄμεμπτοι, blameless, of v.6 are both unique in the corpus. Verse 7 states the couple's condition with στεῖρα, barren, and προβεβηκότες ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις, advanced in their days — and at v.36 that στεῖρα returns: she who was called barren. The word stands three times in the corpus, all three in Luke, and **the third turns it over at 23:29** — μακάριαι αἱ στεῖραι, blessed are the barren. What is a burden at 1:7 is a blessing at 23:29. And since the μακαρίζω of v.48 shares its root with the μακάριος of 23:29, within one book they will call me blessed stands over against blessed are the barren.
Rendering options · 2
Adopted “It came to pass in the days of…” — ἐγένετο not smoothed away
Basis The opening marks the change of style; smoothing it into in the days of Herod there was… erases the difference in texture between preface and narrative.
Smooth to “In the days of Herod there was a priest named Zechariah”
Basis The doubled verb reads awkwardly in English and Korean.
Rejected The awkwardness is in the Greek too — the author has deliberately written in the older manner. Smoothing hides the seam between vv.1-4 and v.5, and that seam is what this chapter shows.
6
ἦσαν δὲ δίκαιοι ἀμφότεροι ⸀ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ, πορευόμενοι ἐν πάσαις ταῖς ἐντολαῖς καὶ δικαιώμασιν τοῦ κυρίου ἄμεμπτοι.

And answering, the angel said to him, “I am Gabriel, who stands before God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
20
καὶ ἰδοὺ ἔσῃ σιωπῶν καὶ μὴ δυνάμενος λαλῆσαι ἄχρι ἧς ἡμέρας γένηται ταῦτα, ἀνθ’ ὧν οὐκ ἐπίστευσας τοῖς λόγοις μου, οἵτινες πληρωθήσονται εἰς τὸν καιρὸν αὐτῶν.

And coming in to her he said, “Rejoice, you who have been graced; the Lord is with you.”
Why this rendering
Luke.1.28 Observation
Syntactic observation
κεχαριτωμένη is the perfect passive participle of χαριτόω, and the verb is **unique in the corpus**. It shares a root with χάρις, grace, which occurs eight times in Luke and four in John and not at all in Matthew or Mark. So the root is familiar and the form is not. Being perfect passive it means one who stands in a state of having been graced — and Luke himself unfolds it at v.30: εὗρες γὰρ χάριν παρὰ τῷ θεῷ, for you have found grace with God. The gloss is inside the text, and the translation need not anticipate it at v.28. The χαῖρε before it divides too: an imperative meaning rejoice, and also the ordinary greeting of the day. Verse 29 takes it up — Mary διεταράχθη, was greatly troubled (unique in the corpus), and reasons ποταπὸς εἴη ὁ ἀσπασμὸς οὗτος, what sort of greeting this might be — the text itself calling it a greeting.
Rendering options · 2
Adopted “Rejoice, you who have been graced” — the perfect kept, nothing added
Basis The perfect passive is rendered as a state received, and beyond that the text is left to speak at v.30.
“full of grace” or “highly favoured one”
Basis Uses the settled renderings.
Rejected Full renders πλήρης, which is not here; and highly supplies a superlative the text does not mark. Being unique in the corpus the word cannot be checked against another place, so anything added is the translation's own judgement — which we do not make in place of v.30.
Lost in translation
the two faces of χαῖρε χαῖρε is both rejoice and a greeting. Verse 29 calls it a greeting, so that reading is the text's own; but dropping the joy loses the root. Neither Korean nor English has a greeting that carries both faces.
29
ἡ δὲ ⸂ἐπὶ τῷ λόγῳ διεταράχθη⸃ καὶ διελογίζετο ποταπὸς εἴη ὁ ἀσπασμὸς οὗτος.
But she was greatly troubled at the word, and reasoned what sort of greeting this might be.

And answering, the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the one being born will be called holy, the Son of God.
36
καὶ ἰδοὺ Ἐλισάβετ ἡ ⸀συγγενίς σου καὶ αὐτὴ ⸀συνείληφεν υἱὸν ἐν γήρει αὐτῆς, καὶ οὗτος μὴν ἕκτος ἐστὶν αὐτῇ τῇ καλουμένῃ στείρᾳ·

43
καὶ πόθεν μοι τοῦτο ἵνα ἔλθῃ ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ κυρίου μου πρὸς ⸀ἐμέ;
And how has this come to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44
ἰδοὺ γὰρ ὡς ἐγένετο ἡ φωνὴ τοῦ ἀσπασμοῦ σου εἰς τὰ ὦτά μου, ἐσκίρτησεν ⸂ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει τὸ βρέφος⸃ ἐν τῇ κοιλίᾳ μου.
For behold, when the sound of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leapt in my womb for joy.
45
καὶ μακαρία ἡ πιστεύσασα ὅτι ἔσται τελείωσις τοῖς λελαλημένοις αὐτῇ παρὰ κυρίου.
And blessed is she who believed that there will be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.”
46
Καὶ εἶπεν Μαριάμ· Μεγαλύνει ἡ ψυχή μου τὸν κύριον,
And Mary said: “My life magnifies the Lord,
Why this rendering
Luke.1.46 Observation
Syntactic observation
The song's first two lines run on two verbs — μεγαλύνει, magnifies, and ἠγαλλίασεν, rejoiced. μεγαλύνω occurs three times in the corpus, one of them Matthew 23:5, where **the Pharisees enlarge their own tassels**. The third is twelve verses on, at 1:58 — ἐμεγάλυνεν κύριος τὸ ἔλεος αὐτοῦ, the Lord magnified his mercy — and there the Lord is the subject. One verb: a man enlarges his clothes, a life magnifies the Lord, the Lord magnifies his own mercy — three places, three subjects. ἀγαλλιάω runs once in Matthew, twice in John, twice in Luke. The tenses divide too: v.46 is present (μεγαλύνει) and v.47 aorist (ἠγαλλίασεν), and the aorists continue through vv.48-55 (ἐπέβλεψεν, ἐποίησεν, διεσκόρπισεν, καθεῖλεν, ὕψωσεν, ἐνέπλησεν, ἐξαπέστειλεν, ἀντελάβετο). So it opens in the present and passes at once into the past, and those pasts state as done what has not yet happened. The ταπείνωσις, lowliness, and μακαρίζω, to call blessed, of v.48 are both unique in the corpus, and the ταπεινούς, the lowly, of v.52 answers the first — lowliness twice, once Mary's own and once that of those who are lifted.
Rendering options · 2
Adopted “My life magnifies the Lord” — one word with Matthew 23:5, the tenses kept
Basis One rendering for μεγαλύνω keeps its three places countable — and since 1:58 stands in this same chapter, a divergence would show at once; the shift from present to aorist is kept so the reader sees what is stated as done. ψυχή is fixed as life in this corpus.
“My soul praises the Lord”, evening the tenses to the present
Basis Reads as a song and removes the awkward shift of tense.
Rejected Praise renders αἰνέω or δοξάζω, not μεγαλύνω; and evening the tenses erases the run of eight aorists, which is what this song shows. Soul departs from the fixed rendering of ψυχή.
47
καὶ ἠγαλλίασεν τὸ πνεῦμά μου ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ τῷ σωτῆρί μου·
and my spirit rejoiced in God my Saviour,

διὰ σπλάγχνα ἐλέους θεοῦ ἡμῶν, ἐν οἷς ⸀ἐπισκέψεται ἡμᾶς ἀνατολὴ ἐξ ὕψους,
through the bowels of mercy of our God, in which a dawn from on high will look upon us,
Why this rendering
Luke.1.78 Observation
Syntactic observation
Two words hang here. σπλάγχνα, bowels, is unique in the corpus, while the verb σπλαγχνίζομαι, to be moved with compassion, is common — five times in Matthew, three in Mark, three in Luke. So the verb recurs and the noun stands once. We have rendered the verb as compassion and recorded the bodily sense as loss (fixed at Mark 6:34); here the noun itself appears and that body shows. ἀνατολή occurs eight times in the corpus, seven of them the east or the rising of the sun (Matt 2:1, 2, 9 of the magi; 8:11; 24:27; Mark 16:8; Luke 13:29), and only this one of a person or a light. Hence the versions divide: read from the sun it is a dawn, read from plants it is a shoot; the Greek settles neither. Verse 79 continues at once with ἐπιφᾶναι τοῖς ἐν σκότει, to shine on those sitting in darkness, which brings the light reading nearer. The σκότος and σκιὰ θανάτου of v.79 sound the same Isaiah passage as Matthew 4:16 — and in our corpus σκότος is fixed as the dark.

Adopted “through the bowels of mercy of our God … a dawn from on high”
Basis σπλάγχνα appears as a noun, so the body is kept — what was lost in the verb can be carried here. ἀνατολή is joined to the light of v.79 and taken as a dawn, with the division recorded below.
“through tender mercy … a shoot from on high”
Basis Renders σπλάγχνα by sense only and reads ἀνατολή as a shoot.
Rejected If the body is erased even at the one place the noun appears, there is nowhere in this corpus to see what σπλάγχνα is. The shoot reading is possible but fits v.79's to shine less well, and is recorded here.
